Tuesday night 9/15 Sr. League Dolphins Vs. Giants

Opening up the 2009 Tabc Jr Hockey season, the Dolphins and Giants both looked to start their seasons on the right foot. With this thought in mind both teams came out flying with no thoughts of defeat. Early on, Giant’s goalie Jack Ganchrow (8th grade Noam) and Dolphins’s goalie Rami Levine (7th grade Noam) did not allow the pressure to get to them, making save after save and showing this game would remain low scoring and be a real goaltending battle. Levine, a last minute addition to the Dolphins, was clearly trying to send a message to Ganchrow that he would not just hand him the Noam starting goalie job on a silver platter.

Midway through the first period though, Elisha Penn (8th grade Yavneh) felt otherwise as he put one in to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead going into the 2nd period. Early in the second period Defenseman Akiva Gottlieb (8th grade Yavneh) joined the scorekeepers sheet giving the Dolphins a comfortable 2-0 lead. Tzvi Bessler (7th grade Yavneh) and Jason Levine (8th grade Moriah) kept putting pressure on the the Dolphins defense and goalie, but Rami Levine would not budge. Finally, late in the second period Tzvi Bessler slipped one through to put the Giants on the board and cut the lead in half. Jack Ganchrow refused to give the Dolphins a comfortable lead making huge saves on all the opportunities by Issac Altman (8th grade Noam) and Alex Gross (6th grade Moriah) and keeping the score at 2-1 to end the 2nd period.

The third period was full of non stop action with a back and forth pace. Looking to tie the score, the Giants threw everything towards the net putting tremendous pressure on Levine. The Dolphins, however played stellar defense sending everything out of the zone putting pressure on Ganchrow and the Giant defense. Coaches Jeremy Levart and the Eitan Zecher/ Jon Packer tandem continued to make smart changes matching up their players hoping for that one play but neither team would budge. As the time continued to slip away the intensity continued to rise. With four minutes to go, down by one the Giants offense flew down the court on a 2 on 1 creating a tremendous opportunity to tie the score. With an open net, the Giants offense shot wide and just missed the net losing out on a huge opportunity to tie the score. This proved to be the climactic point of the game as Levine and the Dolphins defense refused to let anything get through. The Giants pulled their goalie with one minute left hoping the extra player would give them the help they needed but it proved not to help. Akiva Gottlieb scored an empty net goal with three seconds left to seal the game as the dolphins defeated the giants 3-1.
