Tuesday 10/20 Sr. League Giants Vs/ Cardinals

In the early slot on Tuesday, the Cardinals (2-1-1, 5 points) squared off with the Jets (1-4, 2 points). The Cardinals were looking for a victory after an exciting tie with the Giants, while the Jets were just aiming to break their 3 game loosing streak.

At the end of a back and forth, even first period, Rafi Selevan (7th Grade, Yavneh) scored with 40 seconds remaining to put the Cardinals ahead 1-0.

The second period was just a continuation of the first, with both teams playing well and evenly. With 7:53 left in the period, Andrew Teigman (6th grade, Moriah) hit Ami Rosenfeld (7th grade, Moriah) with a nice pass and Rosenfeld put it past Alex Kershenbaum (7th grade, Moriah) to knot it up at one apiece. Five minutes later, Odi Haramati (7th grade, Yavneh) scored unassisted to give the Cardinals the lead again, 2-1.

Heading into the third period with a one-goal advantage, the Cardinals were thinking defense. Their gameplan was to not let the Jets get shots on their forehand. After executing this plan for 4 minutes, the Cardinals continued to play great defense, led by Barak Shachnovitz (8th grade, Hillel) and Russel Oppenheim (8th grade, Ramaz). Despite executing this plan, Rosenfeld scored on a nice backhand shot from the basketball three-point line on the left side to tie the game at two. With 3:28 remaining in the period, #77 scored on a pass from #10 to give the Jets their first lead of the day. The Cardinals had come so far in this game and decided that they weren’t going to lose. Selevan scored his second goal on a cross pass from Haramati to bring the game back to where it started, a tie game. It look as if this game would be headed into OverTime but Aryeh Berman (7th grade, Yavneh) and Max Gruber (7th grade, Yavneh) had something to say about that. With 7 second left until OverTime, Berman managed to find Gruber, who netted his first goal of the season to give the Cardinals the W.

After a long fought evenly matched game, the Cardinals got out of this one with another win to double their win total and go to 2-1-1. Although the Jets played a great game, they got nothing to show for it in the standings. They dropped their 4th straight game after winning the first to drop to 1-4 on the season.

Tuesday night 10/20 Sr. League Patriots Vs. Giants

Tuesday night’s game featured the Giants Vs the Patriots. The Pats came into the game 3-0 with a high powered offense outscoring their opponents by 12 goals. However, the Giants came in with a record of 2-1-1 having played three straight games without a loss.

The game started out with the Giants defense dominating the game and frustrating the Pats offense. This shutdown defense would eventually lead to an early period goal by Jason Levine (8th grade Moriah). The next ten minutes the G-men kept putting on the pressure but were continuously denied by the Pats goalie Shukie Weinstein (7th grade Noam). With 2 minutes left in the period, and the Pats on a power-play, coach Mikey Levy called a smart time- out to set up their power play. It sure paid off when Daniel Levy (6Y) banged in a rebound to tie the game and make his brother look like a genius.

Both teams played evenly in the second period and no goals were scored.

With just 5 minutes left in the game, Ari Fuchs (6th grade Yavneh) shot a rocket from the point to give the Pats a one goal lead. With two minutes left in the game, the Giants kept pressuring the goalie and eventually Levine put in his second the night, off a rebound to force overtime. Overtime started with 3 on 3 and after another Mikey Levy time-out, Rami Laifer (8y) scored a break-away goal that won the game for the Pats. Jack Ganchrow (whose Bar Mitzvah is this Shabbos) was outstanding in defeat, easily saving around 50 shots

Sunday 10/18 Sr. league Dolphins Vs Steelers

To the common TABC Junior hockey fan, October 18th’s matchup of the Dolphins and Steelers was set to be one for the ages. However, with 36 minutes left on the clock and the ball about to be dropped it seemed like the Steelers already thought the game was over, and the Dolphins were just getting ready to play.

As the ref released the puck, the Dolphins blasted right off the faceoff where Akiva Gottlieb (8th grade Yavneh) would score 2 goals in one shift with the help of line mate Yair Knoller (6th grade Noam). But the tag team, looking to write their own script on the score sheet for the night wasn’t done just yet. Later in the period Yair would add 2 of his own dashing through the Steelers defense with unbelievably graceful footwork as if he was a running back on the real Miami Dolphins. This brought the scoreboard to project a 4-0 score in favor of the Dolphins as the teams switched sides in between the 1st and 2nd periods.

The second period began with the Steelers looking to cut back on the lead and would become a fiercely competitive 12 minutes of powerplays. With each time giving it their all shot after shot, pass after pass, clear after clear, the period would come to a stalemate, with the period ending and the Score board still reading 4-0.

After a great speech given by coaches Etan Bardash, Noam Safier, and Yehuda Avner, the Steelers approached midcourt with a certain look in their eyes making you think this game just might not be over yet. The Steelers would be given powerplay shortly into the third period and would capitalize with a ripping one timer from the middle by Jordan Soclof (6th grade Yavneh). However, just as the morale on the Steelers bench began to rise, Alex Gross (6th grade Moriah) reassured the large lead for the Dolphins with a gorgeous goal. The last few minutes of the game would cruise by quickly with another Steeler goal by Jake Reichel (8th grade Yavneh) and an additional Dolphins goal from Akiva Gottlieb giving him a hat trick on the night.

Sunday 10/18 Jr. League Jets vs. Dolphins

A week after the Jets and Dolphins squared off in Miami, the Jets and Dolphins faced off in Teaneck, NJ in one of the most exciting and back and forth games this league has seen in a long time.

With just a few minutes of hockey played, David Adler(5th grade Noam) took a pass at the point and scored on a beautiful shot that put the Jets on the scoreboard first. Joshua Wertenteil(5th grade Yavneh) and the Dolphins had no intent of the Jets taking command of the game. Only 25 seconds after the Jets scored, Wertenteil answered back with a goal of his own. With the score tied at 1 both teams went back and forth trying to capitalize on any opportunity they could. With the period ending Robert Abrahams (5th grade Noam) passed the ball to classmate David Adler who put it in to give the Jets a 2-1 lead after the 1st period.

The second period started with a bang as Jake Lasher (4th grade Moriah) scored a beautiful goal off an asssist from Joshua Wertenteil tying the game 2-2. However, only two minutes later David Adler netted his third goal of the game to give himself a hat trick and much more importantly put the Jets back on top 3-2. Yet again the Dolphins refused to give up as Benjamin Zayat (5th grade Yavneh) fought for the ball in the corner, spun out of the corner and scored evening the score at 3-3 to end the second period.

As if this game was not exciting enough, the third period continued to give us many surprises. Evan Chesner (4th grade Moriah) squeezed through the Dolphin defense to give himself a breakaway and slipped the puck right past the goalie to put the Jets back on top 4-3. With a look of determination, Joshua Wertenteil and Jake Lasher stepped on the court. Only a few seconds into their shift, Wertenteil scored to tie the game and 40 seconds later Lasher scored to give the Dolphins their first lead of the game 5-4 with only minutes left. The Jets offense came rushing back, adding a lot of pressure on to the Dolphins to hold on to their lead. The Dolphin defense held strong for the next few minutes but with only 20 seconds left Adler cut in and scored another goal to send the game into overtime. Only 45 seconds of 3 on 3 overtime play the Jets got a nice shot on net and Evan Chesner found himself in the right place at the right time and banged in a backhand shot to win the game for the Jets and give them their second overtime win of the season.

Sunday 10/18 Jr. League Cardinals Vs. Cowboys

On October 18, 2009 at 1:30 the Cardinals and the Cowboys began an exciting matchup of hockey. Both teams were looking to start their season off on the right foot. With many “rookies” on each roster, both teams looked a bit apprehensive at first and gradually looked better. Gaining confidence after each shift, the teams were ready to go.

Just two minutes into the game Isaac Laifer (5th grade Yavneh) scored a fantastic goal to put the Cardinals up 1-0. Just four minutes after that Eli Spinowitz (3rd grade YNJ), playing in his first ever game in the league, tied the game for the Cowboys with a great goal.

In the 2nd period, Laifer scored yet again to put the Cards back up 2-1. This was followed by four straight goals in just 7 minutes by Jack Stepner (4th grade Noam) to put the Cowboys up 5-2. While many people assumed that Stepner was a veteran in our league, in truth this was his first game. Facing a 5-2 deficit, Laifer knew that he would have to do something special to make this a game. Laifer, who is coming off his first season (out of four) of not winning the championship, matched Stepner goal for goal. He scored two quick goals to cut the lead to 5-4 heading into the 3rd period.

However, Stepner was too much to handle and scored his 5th goal to close out the game and give the Cowboys a 6-4 victory. These fantastic goals by Laifer, Stepner, and Spinowitz were greatly assisted by their teammates and although it was the first game of the season, it was quite exciting.

Sunday 10/18 Jr. League Patriots vs. Steelers

Sunday October 18th, marked the first game for both the Patriots and the Steelers. Both teams played great games to open their seasons and it was a dead heat until the end when the Patriots pulled out a win with a score of 3-2.

Lacking a goalie, the Steelers were forced to put a player in net, in this case young 2nd grader Jake Rothenberg from Noam. The unsuspecting youngster played a great game, especially for someone who hasn’t even played a game before at the position (or any for that matter). Patriots goalie Avery Penn (5th grade Yavneh) also played a solid game making some key saves late in the game.

After a sudden goal by Josh Wiesel (5th grade Yavnehand slow first period, the score was 1-0 Patriots, coming from great play by their defense and goalie. The Patriots came out in the second period firing, and Gabe Isaacs (4th grade YNJ) put in another goal before the game’s halfway mark. The Steelers were desperately in need of a goal to keep the game from getting out of reach. Seth Forman (5th grade Noam) answered with a goal bringing the score to 2-1 heading into the third. Steelers 5th grader Zack Rothenberg (5th grade Noam), older brother of Jake seemed to be on a mission in the third to help his brother get the “W” and after a slew of shots tied the score 2-2.

Neither team wanted to be too aggressive, but neither wanted overtime either, both keeping to a basic 2 offensemen, 2 defensemen formation. With about 5 minutes left in the game, Gabe Isaacs sneaked a shot past goalie Jake Rothenberg for his second goal of the game giving the patriots a 3-2 lead which would stand until the final buzzer rang.

Sat. Night 10/17 Jr. League Eagles Vs Giants

The Giants stepped onto the court hoping to build off last week’s impressive 8-0 thrashing. However, they would learn quickly that not every game would be as easy.

The Eagles veteran goalie Benny Socloff(5th grade Yavneh) was terrific all night thwarting the high flying Giants time after time. The Giants badly outshot the Eagles throughout the game but Socloff was phenomenal, keeping his team in the game.

It wasn’t until the 2nd period when the Giants were finally able to get one passed him. Bryan Alter (5th grade Moriah) shot one over the shoulder of Socloff.

The score would remain 1-0 when the second period ended and the Eagles were thinking that maybe, just maybe, they could put one in to tie up the game at 1 apiece. However, Jeremy Seidel (4th grade Moriah) scored in the 3rd for the Giants. Jacob Nayowitz (4th grade Moriah) had his 2nd straight shutout for the Giants. In the loss, Jacob Rosenfeld (5th grade Yavneh) & Yehuda Saks (4th grade Noam) played nicely for the Eagles.

Sat. Night 10/17 Sr. League Patriots Vs Jets

The Jets came into this game missing several key players & the patriots would make them pay for it by thumping them 6-0.

Jacob Levy(8th grade Yavneh) led the Patriot attack with 2 goals & 1 assist. Other Patriot goals were scored by Rami Laifer (8th grade Yavneh), Ari Fineberg (7th grade Yavneh), Yosef Glatter (7th grade YNJ) & Josh Chesner (6th grade Noam).

Shuki Weinstein (7th grade Noam) made the saves needed to preserve the shutout. It should be noted that Josh Chesner played an exceptionally strong game making several beautiful passes throughout the course of the game.

Sat. Night 10/17 Sr. League Eagles Vs Cowboys

Heading into this game, the Eagles were a disappointing 0-2. With championship aspirations quickly fading away, they desperately needed a win. However, with Mike “Turbo” Pollack (7th grade Yavneh) missing from the Eagles net, Jacob Bach (7th grade Yavneh) was forced to fill in between the pipes.

The Cowboys would test Bach early & often, but on this night he was stellar for the Eagles. The teams went into the 2nd scoreless but 3 minutes in Michael "Buzz" Hirt (8th grade Noam) lit the lamp giving the Eagles a 1-0 lead heading into the 3rd. With the fans going crazy, would this be the night that the Eagles would finally get into the win column?

Early in the 3rd, the Cowboys finally beat Bach as Max Milstein (8th grade Moriah) took a Yoni Schwartz (8th grade Moriah) pass & beat Bach to knot the game at 1. Max has been a goal scoring machine as he was coming off a game in which he scored a hat trick. The score would stay tied all the way to the buzzer signaling the end of regulation.

Overtime hockey didn’t have a chance to get as intense as it usually is when early in OT Yehoshua Lerer ( 7th grade RYNJ) broke in all alone & beat Bach 5 hole giving the Cowboys a 2-1 OT victory.

Thursday 10/15 Sr. League Patriots Vs. Steelers

Mikey Levy, Sports writer

On a cold Thursday night in October, the undefeated Patriots (2-0) played the winless Steelers (0-2) in high scoring hockey game.

Just a few minutes into the game, Rami Laifer (8th grade Yavneh) of the Patriots, scored the first goal of game. After that the goal it seemed that scoring goals was a fast spreading contagious virus as the Patriots scored 2 more goals, both by Daniel Levy (6th grade Yavneh). At the end of the first period it seemed like the Patriots were going to cruise to victory, as they held on to a commanding 3-0 lead.

The Patriots began the second period just where they left off, with another goal! This one was scored by Ari Fineberg (7th grade Yavneh) aided by a beautiful pass off the stick of Jacob Levy (8th grade Yavneh). The Steeler coaches, clearly annoyed by their team’s lackluster play, called a timeout with the hope of lighting a fire under their players. Telling them not to give up, and to think one goal at a time, the message was heard as Samuel (Taco) Rochlin (8th grade Yavneh) put the Steelers on the board. However, the second period ended with the Pats still up by three goals.

The third period began and Rochlin was trying to will his team back. With help from his teammates, he scored his second of the night. However, Laifer matched Rochlin with his second goal of the game to put the Patriots back up by three. However, the story of this game was Taco Rochlin, who scored again to cut the lead back to two, and then scored again to trim the margin to a mere one goal. With that goal, Rochlin became the first player this year to net four goals in one game. The Steelers, suddenly only down one goal, were throwing everything on net. Ari Fuchs (6th grade Yavneh) of the Patriots played an amazing game on defense, repeatedly stopping Steeler players from creating chances. Late in the third, Daniel Levy became the first 6th grader with a hat trick as he scored his third goal of the game to put the Patriots ahead for good at 6-4.

The Steelers deserve a lot of credit for fighting back and not giving up, which will hopefully carry over to their next game as they will attempt to get into the win column for the first time.

Thursday 10/15 Sr. League Cardinals Vs. Cowboys

Tzvika Poleyeff, Sports Writer

On Thursday night the Cardinals (1-1, 2 points) and the Cowboys (1-1, 2 points) battled in what looked like was going to be a classic from the start. Throughout the first period the Cardinals dominated, getting shot after shot while barely giving up any, led by offensemen Odi Haramati (7th grade Yavneh) and Rafi Selevan (7th grade Yavneh) and the defense of Eli Best (6th grade Moriah) and Barak Shachnovitz (8th grade Hillel). They had countless chances for a lead, but the play of Cowboys goalie Solomon Rapoport (7th grade Moriah), aided by the post, kept the game scoreless. With two minutes remaining in the first period, the Cowboys struck first. Yehoshua Lerer (7th grade RYNJ) passed one out of the zone to Zev Markowitz (7th grade Yavneh), who, with no one near him, dove and shot the ball past Cardinals goalie Alex Kershenbaum (7th grade Moriah).

The second period was more evenly played. Each team matched each other shot for shot. After a back and forth period, with one minute left, Sam Schwalbe (7th grade Moriah) brought it up and beat Kershenbaum five-hole to take a 2-0 Cowboys lead. The buzzer sounded signaling the end of the second period, and the Cowboys had a commanding 2-0 lead.

Heading into the third period down by two, the Cardinals players knew that they were going to have to step it up in order to have a shot at a comeback. Step it up is exactly what they did. Only a minute and a half into the period, Haramati took a close shot that Rapoport saved but he gave up a juicy rebound that Daniel Best (7th grade Moriah) put home to bring the Cardinals within one. Then, a mere two and a half minutes later, with the Cowboys on the Powerplay, Haramati found a way to beat Rapoport shorthanded to tie the game at two apiece. After some more back and forth by both teams, Max Milstein (8th grade Moriah) drew a penalty to put the Cardinals on the Powerplay. Shortly after the penalty began, Selevan made a beautiful cross court pass to Haramati who finished it to put the Cardinals ahead 3-2, a lead they would never relinquish. With some more stellar play by Kershenbaum, and his defensemen, Aaron Kahane (6th grade Moriah) and Aryeh Berman (7th grade Yavneh), and a great job by Max Gruber (7th grade Yavneh) creating offensive chances, the Cardinals were able to stave off the Cowboys.

The Cowboys dropped to 1-1 and to fifth place with the loss. The Cardinals, on the other hand, went to 1-1 and jumped into fourth place because of their head to head win against the Cowboys.

Tuesday Night 10/13 Sr. League Dolphins Vs. Jets

Benjy Shulman, Sports Editor

On a cold October night, the Jets and the Dolphins faced off in an intense battle of hockey. The dolphins, yet to lose a game this season, looked confident and started the game with a look of determination. However, the Jets who were coming off a devastating 4-3 loss to the Giants were looking to bounce back.

Early on in the first, the Jets took a one to nothing lead with a beautiful goal by Ami Rosenfeld (7th grade Moriah). After putting the ball through a defenseman’s legs, the ball got a little in front of him and he dove for the ball. While still sliding on the floor he slapped the ball in through Rami Levine’s (7th grade Noam) five-hole. But playing with the confidence of a first place teams, the dolphins stormed right back. Alex Gross (6th grade Moriah) did what every offence man should do and crashed the net for a rebound. It paid off; he put one in for the Dolphins and tied the score up at one to one.

With the start of the second period the Jets had a new rush of spirit and Ami Rosenfeld scored again with a pass to the middle that hit off a defenseman’s foot and went in. For the remainder of the second and beginning of the third the Jets defense and goalie shut down the Dolphins offence. They were pummeling Matty Reinhart with shots from all corners and he was blocking everything. One save which people will be talking about for weeks was on a beautiful shot by Yair Knoller (6th grade Noam) from the slot which was headed towards the top right corner, but Matty came out of nowhere with a spectacular glove save.

However, the Dolphins could not be held at bay for long. Akivia Gottlieb (8th grade Yavneh) had a gorgeous spin out and hit the opposite side top corner with a beautiful shot to tie it up. With four minutes remaining and the score all knotted up at two, both teams picked up their intensity. Both teams played as if it was the last game of the season and with the goalies playing up to task it looked like the game would end tied. With the seconds ticking away and a mere twenty seconds remaining (on the stopwatch), Elisha Penn (8th grade Yavneh) got the ball at the three point line and ripped a shot on net that just got past Matty Reinhart.

As intense as the game was, it was nice to see both teams shake hands after the game, with no complaining or throwing helmets by the Jets in defeat.

Tuesday Night 10/13 Sr. League Eagles Vs. Giants

Avi Hirt, Sports Editor

In a game the 0-2 Eagles absolutely needed to have, their opponents the 1-1 Giants, were looking to contribute to the Eagles early season misery. For the Eagles, the potential of getting their first W of the year against their biggest rivals, the Giants, was an exciting opportunity they planned on capitalizing on.

Six minutes into the first period a beautiful shot by Jason Levine (8th grade Moriah) beat Mikey Pollack to give the Giants a 1-0 lead. The Eagles roared right back getting a goal from Shmuel Levy (8th Grade Yavneh) to nod the score at one. That was all the scoring in the first period and it seemed like it would be another Giants Eagles game that comes down to the wire.

Thing got a little heated in the second period as a couple of penalties were called. However, this period was all about great goaltending. After two penalties by the Giants, the Eagles power play was stopped by the great Giants D and goaltending. Jack Ganchrow (8th grade Noam), goalie of the Giants, turned everything away as he made numerous saves on breakaways and shots from the point. He was also aided by his defensive support Rafi Wind (8th grade Noam) and Eitan Rolnick (8th grade moriah). Jono Wietschner (8th grade Yavneh) along with Adam Burbank (8th grade Yavneh) kept applying pressure, peppering Ganchrow with shots, only to be stopped time after time. After killing off the penalties, momentum seemed to favor theGiants, but great defense by the “Michaels line” [Michael Hirt (8th grade Noam) and Michael Rubin (8th grade Moriah)] kept the scored tied going into the third.

The third period was all Giants, scoring two goals to pull away. They thoroughly outplayed the Eagles scoring two big goals and playing great defense. The first one was scored by Jason Levine (8th grade Moriah) as he notched another multi-goal game. The final goal was scored by Aryeh Pechet (8th grade Moriah). The Eagles though, did not give up, desperately trying to score, but to no avail, as Ganchrow played strong in net. After a long closed door, players only meeting, Assistant Coach Gabi Stone addressed the media saying “our goal is to win the last game we play” and answered no more questions.

Tuesday night 9/22 Sr. League Dolphins Vs. Eagles

The Dolphins and Eagles met up as each team was playing their second game of the young season. The Dolphins, coming off an impressive 3-1 victory over the Giants, were looking to go 2-0, while the Eagles, led by assistant coach Akiva Levy, were hoping to notch their first “W” of the year.

The 1st period featured just one goal as Daniel Raykher (8th grade Yavneh) scored on a nice pass from Shua Beilin (6th grade Moriah) giving the Dolphins a 1-0 lead. The period ended with just that one goal scored, and the game looked like it would be a low scoring affair.

However, the Dolphins jumped all over the Eagles early in the 2nd as they scored three straight goals. Akiva Gottlieb (8th Yavneh) scored twice and Isaac Altman (8th grade Noam) put one in, with Yair Knoller (6th grade Noam) assisting on two of the goals. With the Dolphins holding a rather comfortable 4-0 lead, the Eagles needed a spark to get them going, to try and not let the game fall out of reach. Finally, with 12 seconds left in the period, Jono Wietschner (8th grade Yavneh) scored to cut the lead to 4-1.

The 3rd period started and the Eagles were desperately trying to cut the lead down to two, but Akiva Gottlieb netted his 3rd of the game halfway through the 3rd. Akiva’s goal completed the first hat trick of the season and gave his team a 3 goal lead. However, the Eagles would not go down without a fight. Trying to mount a comeback, Jessie Arbisfeld (7th grade Moriah) ripped a shot off of the post that Jacob Bach (7th grade Yavneh) tapped home to cut the lead to 5-2, but all hopes of a comeback were dashed when just 20 seconds later Isaac Altman scored his 2nd of the night to end the scoring and give the Dolphins a 6-2 victory.

Tuesday Night 9/22 Sr. League Giants vs. Jets

The Jets & Giants squared off not far from the Meadowlands last night. The Jets looked confident as they were eager to begin their season 2-0. However, the Giants were certainly determined not to start the season with a second straight loss and force the coaching staff to answer some questions.

The Jets struck first as Andrew Teigman (6th grade Moriah) stole the puck and nailed the top corner for a 1-0 lead after 1. The giants struck back in the 2nd period to take the lead 2-1 on goals by Tzvi Bessler (7th grade Yavneh) and Jason Levine (8th grade Moriah). The buzzer sounded signaling the end of the 2nd period, and the Giants were clinging to a 2-1 lead.

Matt Reinhart (6th grade Yavneh) did his best to keep the Jets close but with 7 minutes left Rafi Wind (8th grade Noam) won a face-off back to Eitan Rolnick (8th grade Moriah) who ripped a shot top corner for the 3-1 lead. While the Giants seemed to think that the lead was safe, the Jets did not agree. With 6:15 Ami Rosenfeld (7th grade Moriah) scored to cut the lead to one and with a mere 2:40 remaining on the clock Ami Rosenfeld scored yet again to tie the game at 3. With the intensity on a playoff level, each team was giving its all to take the lead. With 1:12 left Jason Levine made beautiful moves to deceive the Jet defenders and tucked in the winner as the Giants defeated the Jets by the score of 4-3.

Tuesday night 9/15 Sr. League Dolphins Vs. Giants

Opening up the 2009 Tabc Jr Hockey season, the Dolphins and Giants both looked to start their seasons on the right foot. With this thought in mind both teams came out flying with no thoughts of defeat. Early on, Giant’s goalie Jack Ganchrow (8th grade Noam) and Dolphins’s goalie Rami Levine (7th grade Noam) did not allow the pressure to get to them, making save after save and showing this game would remain low scoring and be a real goaltending battle. Levine, a last minute addition to the Dolphins, was clearly trying to send a message to Ganchrow that he would not just hand him the Noam starting goalie job on a silver platter.

Midway through the first period though, Elisha Penn (8th grade Yavneh) felt otherwise as he put one in to give the Dolphins a 1-0 lead going into the 2nd period. Early in the second period Defenseman Akiva Gottlieb (8th grade Yavneh) joined the scorekeepers sheet giving the Dolphins a comfortable 2-0 lead. Tzvi Bessler (7th grade Yavneh) and Jason Levine (8th grade Moriah) kept putting pressure on the the Dolphins defense and goalie, but Rami Levine would not budge. Finally, late in the second period Tzvi Bessler slipped one through to put the Giants on the board and cut the lead in half. Jack Ganchrow refused to give the Dolphins a comfortable lead making huge saves on all the opportunities by Issac Altman (8th grade Noam) and Alex Gross (6th grade Moriah) and keeping the score at 2-1 to end the 2nd period.

The third period was full of non stop action with a back and forth pace. Looking to tie the score, the Giants threw everything towards the net putting tremendous pressure on Levine. The Dolphins, however played stellar defense sending everything out of the zone putting pressure on Ganchrow and the Giant defense. Coaches Jeremy Levart and the Eitan Zecher/ Jon Packer tandem continued to make smart changes matching up their players hoping for that one play but neither team would budge. As the time continued to slip away the intensity continued to rise. With four minutes to go, down by one the Giants offense flew down the court on a 2 on 1 creating a tremendous opportunity to tie the score. With an open net, the Giants offense shot wide and just missed the net losing out on a huge opportunity to tie the score. This proved to be the climactic point of the game as Levine and the Dolphins defense refused to let anything get through. The Giants pulled their goalie with one minute left hoping the extra player would give them the help they needed but it proved not to help. Akiva Gottlieb scored an empty net goal with three seconds left to seal the game as the dolphins defeated the giants 3-1.

Tuesday night 9/15: Sr. League Jets vs Eagles

Avi Hirt, sports writer

In a game featuring two teams with championship aspirations, the Eagles opened up their season against the Jets. The Eagles, coached by Avi Hirt and rookie assistant coach Gabi Stone, looked to get Gabi his first career “W”.

The Jet’s season did not look like it was going to start well as they were forced to begin the game without their goalie. In what could have been an absolute disaster, they shockingly survived. Coach Ari Miller, telling his team not to panic, told Shimon Cohen, (8th grade Yavneh) to stand in the net and “do your best”. Cohen stood on his head in net; making some tremendous saves all without any pads. At the six minute mark, Jet goalie, Matt Reinhart (6th grade Yavneh), stepped in net, to lead a team brimming with confidence that they did not let up a goalie during that span. The first period ended scoreless as both Matt Reinhart and Eagle goalie Mikey “Turbo” Pollack (7th grade Yavneh) were stellar in net.

Early in the second period both teams began to pick up their play. Just minutes in, Eagle Defensemen Michael Rubin (7th grade Moriah) made a beautiful pass from the point to Jono Wietschner (8th grade Yavneh) who spun and shot. The puck just managed to trickle through the legs of Matt Reinhart for the first goal of the season for either team. The score remained 1-0 just for a few brief minutes until Jet player Shimon Cohen roofed a wrist shot from the point past Pollack. With the momentum in their favor, Ami Rosenfeld (7th grade Moriah) of the Jets ripped a shot past Pollack, giving the Jets the 2-1 advantage. The second period would end with the Jets leading 2-1.

With Reinhart playing so well, the Eagles knew that if they were going to score their offense would need to supply more pressure on net. Early in the 3rd, Shmuel Levy(8th grade Yavneh) and Adam Burbank (7th grade Yavneh) of the Eagles did just that, creating opportunities and getting some quality shots on net. However, it was going to take something incredible to get one past Reinhart this evening. With four minutes remaining in the third and the Jets clinging to a 2-1 lead, Weitschner got the puck, made a move, and came streaking down the court with a breakaway. Reinhart once again made a beautiful save, preserving the lead for his team. All of the jet defensemen played solidly until the buzzer to hold on for a 2-1 victory.
